If you ask me to describe a giddy mix of graceful cultures, rich history and delicious shopping & dining in one word, my answer would be ‘Kolkata’ without a second thought. The capital of Indian state of West Bengal, this gorgeous city is rightly dubbed as ‘City of Joy’. It is a place where past, present and even future blazes brighter than anywhere else. Kolkata is situated on historical Hoogly River and is known around the world for its fascinating cultures, vibrant festivals and delicious Bengali cuisines. Friendly locals would give you a great homely feel when trotting across the town.
With a plethora of places of interest dot the city everywhere, Kolkata trip makes a really good time with family and friends. Take a couple of days in spare, soak in India’s Cultural Capital before you leave. Following are some not-to-miss attractions in Kolkata which remain in every tourist’s check list.
Victoria Memorial: visit to this gorgeous marble memorial makes you peep into Indian history right from the arrival British to their way out from the subcontinent. This shining white building is dedicated to Queen Victoria and is dotted with splendid exhibition spaces, auditoriums and historical sculptures.
Fort William: constructed in 1781, the octagonal shaped fort has been the nerve center of Indian Army operations post independence. It serves as a connector between Kolkata and the Howrah district and the Eastern part of the country.
