Awesomely tucked in lap of Himalayan Mountains, Jammu &
Kashmir is a thriving territory varying widely ethnically as well as
geographically. The state is divided in three main regions on basis of
geographical characteristics, climate and nature of population. The Southern
part of the state, known as Jammu Region, is a transition zone from Indian
plains to Himalayas. Majority of population here is Hindus. The north of the
state is dominated by beautiful Kashmir Valley. The natural bounties, glorious
climate and splendid tourism attractions give Kashmir a long-standing
reputation of a being ‘Paradise on Earth’.
Population here is dominated by Muslims. The third region comes as
‘Ladakh Region’, which is a high-altitude plateau North of Himalayas. It
wouldn’t be an exaggeration if Ladakh is said to miniature version of Tibet. People
in Ladakh are Tibetan by culture and religion, and there are many Tibetan
refugees.
Tourism has long been a prominent part of state’s economy. Despite
of some religion disputes and political difficulties, Kashmir has been thronged
by thousands of travelers, both domestic and foreigners, annually. However, the
sporadic acts of violence gave some sharp decline in influx of travelers to the
valley. After Kargil War of 1999, the number started dwindling leaving many
people in Kashmir without an occupation and no means of livelihood. But now the
situation in the valley has been taken into control and tourism is flourishing
like never before. For revival and promotion of tourism in the state, the
Government along with private businesses in tourism industry has constantly
been attempting.
